Heat Up Your Health: Summer Strategies for Type 2 Diabetes

Summer is more than just a season of sunshine and vacations – it’s the ideal time to kickstart your journey towards better diabetes health.  From warm weather and longer days to fresh produce and delicious recipes, the summer months are perfect to start new healthy habits. Here are several reasons why summer and diabetes management go hand in hand:

Soak Up the Warm Weather

Sunshine and warm temperatures make it easier to get outside and move. Walking, biking, swimming and gardening are just some examples of outdoor summertime fun. Since regular exercise is an important tool in managing diabetes, summer is a great time to get moving. As an added bonus, that sunlight from being outside can increase our Vitamin D, which in turn can help improve insulin sensitivity.

Embrace the Longer Days

Increased daylight means more time for physical activity. Whether it’s an early morning walk, an evening bike ride, or playing your favorite sport, the longer days provide ample opportunities to stay active. One of my favorite strategies to lower blood sugars is to walk after meals, and the increased daylight supports that after-dinner walk (which can also help with digestion, weight loss, family bonding, and mental health!).

Get Active with Gardening

Gardening is a popular summer activity that provides moderate exercise and helps reduce stress. In addition to the physical and mental benefits, growing your own vegetables ensures a fresh supply of diabetes-friendly foods. Regardless of your gardening experience or how much space you have, there are options for you including containers, raised beds, or a small square of land.

Enjoy Seasonal Fresh Produce

Summer brings a bounty of fresh fruits and vegetables that are perfect for a diabetes-friendly diet. Enjoy the sweetness of berries, the crispness of cucumbers, and the nutrient-packed greens like spinach and kale. These foods are lower in carbs and high in essential nutrients, making them great choices for maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.

Whip Up Summer Recipes

Warm weather is a great time to experiment with light, refreshing recipes. Cold soups, mouthwatering salads, and refreshing smoothies made with seasonal ingredients can be both delicious and nutritious. These meals are perfect for keeping your diet varied and enjoyable while managing your diabetes.

Stay Hydrated

The warm weather naturally encourages us to drink more water, which is essential for managing diabetes. Staying hydrated helps keep blood sugar levels in check and supports overall health. Make it a habit to carry a water bottle with you and take frequent sips throughout the day. If you need a little flavor boost, try water with lemon, lime, cucumber and/or fresh mint.

Form New Habits During Vacation

Summer vacations offer a break from the regular routine, presenting a perfect opportunity to start new, healthier habits. Use this time to experiment with new recipes, establish a regular exercise routine, and focus on self-care. The change in routine can make it easier to integrate these new habits into your daily life.

Benefit from Social Support

Summer is a season of social gatherings and outdoor activities. Engaging with friends and family during barbecues, picnics, or group hikes can provide the emotional support needed to make lifestyle changes. Sharing your goals with loved ones can help keep you accountable and motivated.

By taking advantage of these summer opportunities, you can make significant strides in managing your Type 2 Diabetes. If you need personalized guidance and support on this journey, consider working with a diabetes coach who can help you set goals, stay accountable, and achieve better health outcomes. Remember, every step you take towards managing your diabetes is a step towards a healthier and happier you.
